    You know the woody plant with the funny … 

    You know the woody plant with the funny leaves that we bring in during the fall? I finally found out what it is -a Coral Plant. Native of Mexico, Cent America, and Brazil. Grandpa Huelsman started it from seeds he brought from FL. If we do it right next spring, perhaps we can get it to bloom. The flowers look like coral.

    Per Norm’s request, I am posting an upd … 

    Per Norm’s request, I am posting an update. My excuse for not posting much is that I don’t get online much for social purposes. Usually it’s for school. The only way I saw Norm’s post is because I was checking for an e-mail from mom and noticed the Huelsman blog was updated. Plus, Tommy and I spend most of our days together. We do a lot of odd and end things that doesnt leave much time for the cyber world. But enough with my excuse. I don’t want to get into much detail here, but school is still going. It is different than what I am use to. We will see how it unravels. I still feel like I just moved in. I don’t feel I can call this place my home away from home just yet, even with the new church. The town I live in now is very nice, but not like Summerville. The best thing about moving and changing jobs is that I’m closer to Tommy.       You know I’ve been in PGH for so long sometimes I think it would be refreshing to just pick up and leave. But I have a lot of great friends and networks I’ve gotten to know over the years.

      Anyway thanks for the update. Otherwise dad was about to take over the site with his turkey photos. 🙂

      Glad things are going well, daughter. It’s tough moving and changing things, but it’s a good life experience.

      Hannah, is doing great. Turning into a pretty good keeper. Great sense of distribution. Her routine: School, homework, practice, homework, watch NCIS vids as she goes to sleep. Sounds like all of you guys at that age -except for the NCIS vids.

      You guys are in trouble, as I take our new CoolPix cam every time I go out to the woods. Now that Hannah taught me to download it directly to the puter, you’re in double trouble! I’ll swamp the site.

      Ungh… lucille enough with the mushy talk. Blah.

      Moving is a great thing, but Being able to call a place home is tough. Just gotta find a niche. I have this philosophy that you can’t call a place home untill you can walk around in it in complete darkness without stabbing your toe or running into things.

      Good point Carl. In this almost middle of nowhere town, it gets pretty dark at night. When it comes time for bed, I have to switch on my faster-than-light-speed-gene from Dad that allows me to get into bed before the lights go out. Otherwise I wake up with another bruise on my leg.

      Carl, i think that home philosophy only works if there isn’t someone else leaving stuff lay around. And you can’t be a klutz. I lived at home for 18 years and still managed to run into the hallway wall in broad daylight. So the many night lights in our home are only partly for the kids.
      I have always enjoyed moving and getting a fresh start with people, life, routines, etc. It makes starting good habits easier to start from scratch at a new location. Home will always be where the love of my life is (mushy mushy!).
      By the way, the kids are doing great, Cade is reading at a fourth grade level, and Ava is stringing words together when she talks. We currently have visitors from NE and IN. 9 extra kids here and two extra moms!
      I was given an iPad a few weeks ago and cant seem to be able to post on blogs. Hence the hijacking of this post!

      It looks like a mile or two. I can see just about everything in anaheim from this hotel. I’m on the ninth floor. I see Disney land, the garden walk, the stadium. It’s really flat, except for the mountains of in the distance.

    Green Roof Updates 

    Over this summer I”ve been working with Allegheny County as they install a green roof atop their building downtown. My involvement has been to help them document the project. I”ve mentioned the project here before; you can read more at .

    Today I put up a quick gallery of photos I”ve taken during the project. A few are from before construction began and then shortly after. View my .

    So why am I still talking about this project? At the beginning of Eating -containing food is beneficial, whether it is cooked or raw. our discussions about the roof the idea came up that AiP should grow food our Culinary Department. It only makes sense right? Earlier in the day I was back on the roof with a Faculty member investigating the reality of growing vegetables and herbs. The conclusion is that we would need to install some grow boxes or add to the soil that is currently present. The current soil developed specially for growing plants on the roof with other economical benefits just isn”t right for food growing purposes.

    I was interested to learn much about what it takes (or how little it can take) to grow great fresh food. I don”t think I”ll develop a green thumb anytime soon but I”ll keep updating on the project.
