Sam Rodgers
YEAR: Junior
WEIGHT: Heavyweight
RECORD: 20-8
TOURNAMENT TESTED: Champion at Elyria Catholic John McNulty Invitational; runner-up at Black River J.B. Firestone Invitational; runner-up at Chippewa Invitational; runner-up at Patriot Athletic Conference; runner-up at Brooklyn sectional and fourth at Garfield Heights district.
COACH’S TAKE ON POSTSEASON: “He’s going down there to win it, that’s our goal. We set our goals high and then we go for it. It’s going to be tough but he’s got a good draw. His matches are always close. He’s been in overtime several times over the past few weeks. Heavyweight is unpredictable and anything can happen.” — Sedlick
STATE EXPERIENCE: First year
STATE OUTLOOK: Rodgers will be the underdog in his opener against Clarksville Clinton-Massie senior Mike Stenger (33-5) — the Kettering Fairmont district champion who placed sixth at heavyweight in 2010. An upset would set up a probable quarterfinal matchup with Huron junior Nino Majoy — the Bucksman projected state runner-up. The good news for Rodgers is that two-time state placer and projected champion Mimmo Lytle of Swanton is on the other half of the bracket.
