    Runners line up here!

Got the info for the 5k/10k race at Kelly’s yesterday. It is on June 12, the day after we arrive.
If you are running/walking let me know and I will send in your registration. I also need your shirt size.
We should have the goal of a placer this year! We were so close once before!

I didn’t see where the hecklers are supposed to go.

      • dale 5:05 pm on March 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Norm, the hecklers will be hard at work fishing in order to prove food for the table. Someone has to provide for those running slackers!

Joy, I’ll whip up a bunch of my special mayfly repellent when I’m down in my laboratory next month.

    • joy 2:53 pm on March 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I tried to be a photographer last year (while the kids were napping) but I was attacked by the mayflies so most of my pictures were taking from inside the porch.

Tommy and I already have looked at the date. We are wanting to run. We just need to get our info in. We are running in the 10K in Charleston at the beginning of April, so I hope we keep with our training by June. I think we will do the 5k at Kelley’s. Anyone joining us?

Carl, I will destroy you. boxing or running or anything for that matter.

Sounds like a serious fishing derby might be in order here. Winner doesn’t have to clean fish for one whole day!

    Wedding planning trip

I went to SC this past weekend to help Lucille and Tommy jump start the wedding planning process. We were wildly successful and got most of the major planning done. The boys should be hearing from Tommy soon about wedding attire.Lucille and the girls are all set and just need to get sized.I plan to make the flower girl dresses, so Joy I will be in touch. The mother of the bride dress is picked out-just waiting on availability.Food, cake, flowers and photog are either deposited or penciled in. So in case you doubted – we are having a wedding!!!

Shirts untucked and no belts is [I hope] the appropriate attire.

    • joy 12:02 pm on February 23, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Thats a lot of work for one weekend! Who all is in the wedding? And which dresses (Lucilles and bridesmaids) did she decide on? Any pictures of things like the cake, flowers, your dress, etc?

    • carl 3:37 pm on February 23, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Norm I fully agree on the shirts untucked, but can belts be optional. They are stylish and practical at the same time.

    • Norm 10:56 am on February 24, 2011 Permalink | Reply

How many flower girls will there be? I remember Lucille just crying the whole time she was a flower girl so I expected her to cut that out of this wedding. She must want to have other young girls go through the same torture.

    • joy 12:54 pm on February 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have seen some amazing beach weddings where the guys wore khakis and white UNTUCKED shirts…and bare feet. That was always my dream…maybe for our 75 anniversary we could afford it. Ha.
Sounds like there will be three little flower girls? Its a tough gig, but we always appreciate it when we grow up..or remember crying while wearing itchy dresses…either way, there are cute pictures!

If the wedding is on a beach, maybe Diver Dan will show up?

    Heard from the World Travelers

Heard from Lucille on Father’s Day. As Papa said she is doing well, but counting down the days until her return.
Carl and Jane called yesterday from a posh resort location!
Having a great time. We relish each contact and will continue to pray for everyone’s safe return. Can we plan a little reunion of sorts before everyone heads out for other states and fall schedules? Think on it!

I’m going to be in Indianapolis the first week of august. Perhaps I can drop by on the front or tail end of that trip. Will be driving with a friend.

New update from Nick. His ordination/installation will be Aug. 8th. So the first weekend might be a good time for a get together. Maybe Lucille will be here from SC.

    Mom Medical Update

Had some good medical news this past week.
My cholesterol levels all went down to the normal range.
Doc only wanted me to cook with olive oil and take some more fish oil supplements.
Also saw Dr. Bhatt (oncologist) on Friday. He said my numbers were “fabulous”. Everything normal.
Now to walk off these few extra pounds at Kelly’s Island. I hope a bird chasing stick is readily available!!

    • Joy 8:17 am on May 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That’s fantastic! So do you have to continue taking medication for the cholesterol?

    Sibling question

Since Hannah doesn’t look at the blog very often, I can ask you this about her….
We are contemplating sending her to Costa Rica with the Spanish teacher next summer (during Kelley’s). What is your opinion of a 16 year old traveling , specifically Hannah, on a trip such as this. And would any of you be willing to contribute to the Costa Rica fund? Remember that red sports car you boys said you would buy her? Maybe this is it. Your good opinions mean a lot.

    • Norm 10:29 am on June 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

In my opinion, traveling inspires and opens the mind in ways nothing else can. I have many friends who have traveled abroad at a younger age and they have great and unique perspectives on the world that others do not. This happened in small part with me when I went to Japan but I was too young to fully appreciate what I was doing.

How long will she be gone and what will they be doing there? How old were Carl and Chris when they played soccer abroad?

I don’t think age should be the deciding factor. Better questions might be; is she mature and responsible enough for this type of trip, what is happening in that part of the world, who else is on the trip.

How much are we talking here? I would guess 1,500 – 2,000. If Hannah spends the summer mastering HTML and Adobe Dreamweaver she could easily make that much money in a weekend. Freelance web developers are cashing in right now. (I learned the basics of html in a few weeks and you don’t even need the internet to do it. Seriously.)

    • chhuelsman 7:01 pm on June 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I agree with @Norm. Carl and I both went about the world when we were in high school and i feel this would be a great opportunity for her to see something totally different in her life. I would jut be concerned who she will be going with and where she will be going. If it is not completely supervised by adults it might be sketchy for teens running amuck in Costa Rica.
I believe this is also a great opportunity for hannah to start making her own type of money. As we all can tell she is not to athletically advanced and I know numerous kids that i grew up with who were making money either babysitting or working at a local job as a cashier or burger flipper. If she would realize she could start this summer (after KI) she could easily have the money by the time she goes. As long as she doesn’t blow it??
      Thats my opinion.

    • nick 9:59 pm on June 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

don’t speak for me, Chris. i actually think Hannah IS athletically advanced. she’s doing great! go Hannah! can i get an autograph?
well, i shall opine as well. experience isn’t everything. some things are best not understood. so it all depends on what they are doing. and i think even as important, if this teacher is sufficiently competent to manage teenagers on a trip overseas. Has she/he done it before? will there be other chaperons? stuff like that.
and how does she feel about it?

    • Carl the World Weary 8:40 am on June 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I have to disagree with chris also. i bet hannah would be able to whoop any of our butts in a fight when we were at that age.

contrary to what Nick thinks I believe experience is most important. You can’t pass levels if you don’t get enough Exp Points.

I would love to help in anyway i could. Do they need chaperones (i don’t know how to spell that).I wanted to plan a trip around that time next year anyway.

    • Norm 10:19 am on June 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yoda Master Nick has touched on a good point. Luke Skywalker never left the farm and went on to become the greatest Jedi Master.

I still say she start working on HTML asap.

    • Carl the World Weary 12:55 pm on June 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I agree with chris about getting a job. The one i had in highschool was very valuable. she doesn’t need to get a regular job like flipping burgers or waiting tables. Maybe working for a radio station or something. that would be the bees knees.

    • chhuelsman 12:33 pm on June 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I guess i forgot to elaborate on what i meant athletically advanced haha my bad. Sorry Hannah your great. I mean she isn’t playing club sports or hardcore training all day everyday. I just believe she had more time then the others all did in her summers and she can be able find a job?
I also feel that mom and dad have raised us all in a way that they have let us experience so much and we all have learned so much from those experiences. I think experiencing things is the best way to fully understand them. but thats beside the point.
I think it is far that since carl and I both traveled in high school. she should be given the same opportunity. As long as it is completely chaperoned. I think i speak for carl and i, that we learned so much from the two weeks that we were in Europe. It defiantly gave me a taste of living away from home. I believe it would be good for her.

    • Lucille 12:04 pm on June 8, 2009 Permalink | Reply

So time to the big sister to give advice for the younger. First word to come to mind, memories. She will remember this trip for the rest of her life. As long as the trip was well planned and adult supervision is sufficiant, I think it is a great idea. I personally know that being a teacher, we have much responsibiliy and do our best watching the students because our job is on the line (and of course we deeply care about each and every child….right). I trust Wellington to do a good job making sure this supervision will be good enough. Money is the next concern. If Pain wants to go bad enough, I agree to have her get a job. Being this late into the summer, it might be slim pickings around town, so she may have to settle with waitressing or such. Money is money! Mom, do you know how much it will be?
